German Shorthaired Pointer History and General Information

History and Origin

The German Shorthaired Pointer was originally bred in the 19th century to fill a need for an all-purpose hunting and guard dog that would also be easygoing enough to get along with the whole family. Bred from the Old Spanish Pointer, several types of hunting hound and the English Pointer, this even-tempered new breed was faster, more energetic and versatile in the hunt than any of its predecessors alone.

General Information

This is a people-oriented dog with an easygoing, enthusiastic personality. This dog thrives on mental and physical stimulation, and is a good choice for owners with active lifestyles. A short walk around the block won’t be enough for this pet - this is a dog that requires lots of regular activity, whether it’s running, hiking, hunting, fetching or agility training. The Shorthaired Pointer can be rambunctious and destructive without enough exercise or attention, especially when young. Bred to work independently, this dog has a mind of its own. Don’t be surprised if your pet gets distracted by strange sounds or smells; he’s got his own agenda. This breed is a natural hunter (so don’t turn your back on its interactions with cats and other small animals) and makes an excellent watchdog.

The Shorthaired Pointer’s smooth coat is very easy to groom; just brush regularly with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary.
