The Bulldog – with its distinctive body-builder shoulders, square wrinkly face and sturdy limbs – has won few beauty contests, but lots of hearts. This breed is the 14th most popular dog registered with the AKC in the United States.

History and Origin:   The Bulldog gets its name from a legacy of being used in the bloody sport of bull baiting.  Even Queen Elizabeth I was reputed to enjoy the sport of watching battles between bulls and bulldogs.

General Information:  TheBulldog has a great sense of humor, and never really grows out of puppyhood.  This dog needs to feel like part of the family, and should never be left alone for long periods of time – otherwise it can quickly develop destructive habits like chewing.  Nor is this strong animal suited for prolonged exercise.  If you’re looking for an agile, athletic dog that will run alongside your bike or join you on hikes, you should select another breed.

Despite the tough appearance, this dog has a kind, patient personality and is rarely angry or aggressive. A strong, confident and experienced owner is absolutely necessary, however, as this dog needs to know where it stands in order to be happy and comfortable; a Bulldog who understands it's ‘place’ in the human pack, will be reliably well-adjusted in social situations. You’ll find the Bulldog will get along with family, friends and usually with other pets as well, as long as it has been socialized and trained properly from puppyhood.

Health Ailments:  This dog’s shortened muzzle makes it hard to breathe in heat and humidity.  Always keep your bulldog in air conditioned rooms during days of high temperatures.  This breed’s body structure can cause a number of health problems, including skin irritations and respiratory ailments.

Popular Mascot:  The Bulldog’s tenacity and courage have made this dog a symbol of Great Britain– not to mention colleges and universities, military institutions and associations.  Bulldogs are mascots at CaliforniaStateUniversity, Fresno; GeorgetownUniversity; Louisiana Tech; MississippiStateUniversity; The Citadel; U.S. Marine Corps; and YaleUniversity, among others.
