Teeth Cleaning

Daily dental health is as important for healthy kitty teeth as it is for our own. Dental disease left untreated can actually cause serious health risks for your pet, and shorten his lifespan considerably, so it’s highly recommended that you begin your kitty’s dental hygiene program while he’s still a young kitten. A regular program of home teeth brushings, along with yearly cleanings at the vet’s office will help your cat live a long and healthy life with all his teeth intact.

Never thought about trying to brush your pet’s teeth? It’s actually pretty simple, especially if you begin the practice while kitty’s still very young.

First, spend a few days getting your kitten used to having you look into his mouth. While you’re relaxing together, open the jaws and gently touch the teeth and gums. Praise kitty softly all the while, and offer a small treat afterward.

Once he’s no longer startled by your touch inside his mouth, you’re ready to give it a try. You’ll need a finger toothbrush and a special fish or poultry-flavored kitty toothpaste (both available at pet stores). Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your finger toothbrush; open kitty’s mouth, then gently rub your finger toothbrush in a circular motion on his teeth and gums. It's not necessary to do the back sides of the teeth.Lastly, give kitty lots of praise and reward his patience with a crunchy treat and lots of affection after the brushing is finished.
